I seem to recall reading that they only use it against aircraft and cruise missiles which makes sense in a way. And "thousands" of SA-12s being operational is likely an overstatement.
First, if you don't have to lug a warhead around you can have a much smaller missile.
The SM-6 will very likely range in the vicinity of 200+ miles and the SM-3 will be able to hit missiles outside the atmosphere. Take the Original THAAD (the one currently under developement is significantly different). ? The former is a modernized version of the PAC-3 missile and is used in new Patriot complexes, the latter is a ground version of the German missile air-to-air close combat IRIS-T.MEADS can reach targets at the altitude of 25 km. The downside of that approach with an aircraft is maybe you only punch a hole in it. With THAAD and SM-3 (and likely NMD and PAC-3) they can actually pick WHERE they want to impact on the target. Aegis will be able to go after pretty much anything short of an ICBM.
it was a technology demonstator and will never see combat. Probably something like 10-15kg rather than 100-150.I think they call it what they do because it's not always detonated.

That's my point. If I had to pick the most effective SAM system at that time (2010ish) I'd pick Aegis with SM-6 ERAMs and SM-3.
