It is a growing blindness and deafness to the Eternal, and we find ourselves tragically limited to the horizon of this finite world, such that we “no longer grasp the ‘transcendent’ character of [our] ‘existence as man.’” People (both in the church and out of it) increasingly lack the plausibility structures to make sense of faith in God, or their place in the world. As the darkness came upon the people in the middle of the day, and as they saw the Sun disappearing and felt the cold breezes starting to surround them, their limited understanding caused them to believe that the Sun had died and the world was ending. In many ways, it is this shift in perspective that has destroyed the opportunity for intimacy with an eternal, ever-present God. The eminent philosopher Charles Taylor talks about the secular West as being trapped in what he calls “the immanent frame”— meaning that we find ourselves enclosed (framed) within a view of the world that locks out the possibility of transcendence. This cosmic display is a vivid reminder of how dependent we are on the care and plan of God.Suppose with me, just for a moment, that God chose to stop the movement of the moon at the time of totality where you are. God asks Job a question that at once reveals Job’s limitations and God’s infinite power:This is a profound distinction between Creator and creature. Although this is an inaccurate scientific interpretation of a solar eclipse, there is metaphorical significance in suggesting that a world that has lost connection to its radiant Sun (God) is a world that is ending, and that it is a dark and precarious place.The eclipse (or concealment of God) is therefore a powerful twenty- first-century metaphor because it explains so much about the struggle we face to know God. The dramatic change from light to dark to light that occurs this day happens at the direction of God to bring honor to his name. (Hadith 2:154) In modern times, superstitions and fear surrounding solar and lunar eclipses have diminished. He has studied and taught about biblical childrearing for 30 years. A solar eclipse may seem like an odd occurrence, but it is no secret to God or the authors of the Bible. But this one is huge because so many people will be in the path of totality as it crosses the United States. It will go forward and bring light again to the darkness because this serves the plan and purpose of God. NASA says that there are at least 2 or 3 eclipses of the sun every year and 2 total eclipses every 3 years. In both Elijah’s and Jeremiah’s lives, God knew their faith would endure the eclipse. Myths often involved a beast trying to destroy the Sun with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance—or, a Sun-god becoming angry, sad, or sick.
